Protect free speech, reconsider overly broad anti-terrorism bill
To: Rep. Moore
From: A constituent in Milwaukee, WI
November 20
The proposed legislation raises significant concerns about potential infringement on constitutionally protected rights, specifically freedom of speech. Granting the government broad authority to designate organizations as "terrorist supporting" and revoke their tax-exempt status based on loosely defined criteria could have a chilling effect on legitimate political discourse and advocacy. Such a measure risks stifling dissent and curtailing the free exchange of ideas that is vital to a healthy democracy. While the goal of combating terrorism financing is understandable, this bill's provisions appear overly expansive and lack robust due process protections. There are valid fears that it could be weaponized against lawful organizations simply for expressing disfavored viewpoints or critiquing government policies. Any legislation impacting First Amendment freedoms must be narrowly tailored and include robust safeguards against abuse or overreach. I urge reconsideration of this proposed law to address the constitutional concerns highlighted by civil liberties groups and legal experts. Maintaining robust protections for free speech, peaceable assembly, and the free flow of information is foundational to our democratic system of government. A more balanced approach that preserves these core liberties while targeting true threats of violence is needed.
