Vote NO on the SAVE America Act

To: Sen. Rosen, Rep. Lee, Sen. Cortez Masto

From: A verified voter in Las Vegas, NV

April 17

NO on the SAVE America Act. It is my understanding from researching and news reports that the SAVE America Act and the SAVE Act, if passed, would require voters to present specific documentation like a passport or birth certificate to register or update their voter registration. A Real ID would not suffice. The SAVE America Act is considered by some to be a modern-day poll tax, as the required documents come at a substantial monetary cost. The SAVE America Act could disenfranchise millions of eligible voters who lack these documents, particularly women who changed their last name upon marriage and those from marginalized communities. The cost, comprehension of how to obtain documents, ability to obtain documents, time to obtain documents, and the possible delay or delinquency of receiving documents in a timely manner could fail to provide the opportunity to vote by deadlines. Another argument against the SAVE America Act is that it is a solution to a non-existent problem. In 1996, the U.S. Congress passed a law, 18 USC 611: Voting by Aliens, prohibiting noncitizens from voting in federal elections, including elections for the U.S. House, U.S. Senate and presidential elections. In an online search, I read that a 'non-citizen' voting is already illegal and rare in the U.S. An online search revealed that "Proven cases of noncitizen voting are extremely rare, with the Heritage Foundation documenting only 68 instances over the last 40 years, which is less than 0.0001% of all votes cast. This indicates that illegal immigrants voting is not a widespread issue."
