Reject Bill HR 9495, Safeguard Constitutional Freedoms
To: Sen. Smith, Sen. Klobuchar
From: A constituent in Minneapolis, MN
November 25
The recently passed House bill HR 9495, which would allow the Treasury Department to strip non-profit organizations of their tax-exempt status if deemed to support "terrorism", is a severe overreach that threatens free speech and due process. This vague and far-reaching legislation lacks any evidentiary standards, giving the administration unchecked power to arbitrarily target civil society groups based on political motivations. As representatives voice concerns over authoritarianism, providing such a "blank check" to label dissenters as terrorists is a dangerous path that erodes constitutional protections. I urge you to reject this unconstitutional measure that violates fundamental rights when it reaches the Senate. Preserving checks and balances against abuses of power must be a paramount concern for protecting American democracy and civic freedoms.
