H.R. 1, the budget reconciliation bill recently passed by House Republicans, is a wholesale repeal of the groundbreaking clean energy investments initiated by the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) and is the worst attack on our environment and climate in US history. It would cut clean energy tax credits, eliminate home energy rebates, and impose new fees on electric vehicle owners. That's going to drive up our energy bills (over $400 for the average American family), kill hundreds of thousands of clean energy jobs, and let fossil fuel pollution continue unchecked. Clean energy is poised to be one of the greatest creators of new jobs and shared prosperity in US history - this bill takes an axe to it. At the same time, the bill is a major giveaway to the fossil fuel industry. It mandates the sale of our public lands to Big Oil, lowers royalty rates, and lets corporations fast-track polluting projects with minimal review. The legislation also guts programs that keep our families and communities healthy, from vehicle and methane emissions standards to air pollution monitoring programs in schools. It eliminates the IRA's Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund and the Clean Air Act's Environmental Justice Block Grants which provide disadvantaged communities with resilience funding for wildfires, floods, and extreme heat. Moreover, it includes extreme policies like the REINS Act, which would block agencies from creating new climate safeguards. Americans overwhelmingly support clean energy and environmental protections. This bill will dismantle clean energy investments, kill jobs, and roll back critical climate and pollution safeguards - all to give tax breaks to billionaires.
