Reject the SAVE Act and Protect Voting Access

To: Rep. Luna

From: A constituent in Largo, FL

February 12

I am writing to urge you to vote against the SAVE Act (Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act), which the House passed for the second time in April 2025. This legislation would impose unnecessary barriers to voter registration that would harm eligible voters across our state without addressing any real problem. The SAVE Act requires documentary proof of citizenship to register to vote, despite it already being illegal for noncitizens to register and vote in federal or state elections. Every state already requires voters to affirm or verify their citizenship status when registering. This bill creates a redundant and divisive requirement that solves nothing while creating significant obstacles for legitimate voters. The documentation requirement would disproportionately harm specific groups of eligible voters. Military families would need to present documentation every time they re-register when they move to a new duty station. Families recovering from natural disasters who lost vital documents would face additional burdens while rebuilding their lives. Americans who have changed their names, including married women, would need to secure updated documentation before exercising their fundamental right to vote. The racial disparities are particularly troubling. Citizens of color are three times more likely than white citizens to lack documents such as birth certificates, passports, naturalization certificates, or certificates of citizenship, or to face difficulties accessing them. While approximately half of all American adults possess a passport, two-thirds of Black Americans do not. Voting is the cornerstone of our democracy, and access to the ballot box should be protected, not restricted. The SAVE Act creates barriers where none are needed and would prevent eligible citizens from participating in our elections. I urge you to reject this legislation and stand up for the voting rights of all eligible Americans.
