Insurrection Act Fear - 4/20 review of border deadline!
To: Rep. Beyer
From: A constituent in Arlington, VA
April 7
I write with urgent concern about the impending April 20th deadline for a joint DOD/DHS report that could recommend invoking the Insurrection Act at our southern border. While framed as an immigration measure, evidence suggests this may extend to suppress political opposition.
The facts are alarming:
- President Trump's January 20th executive order explicitly directed consideration of the Insurrection Act
- The Act grants virtually unchecked power to deploy military forces domestically
- The Supreme Court ruled in 1827 that presidential determinations under this Act face no judicial review
- Former Defense Secretary Esper's memoir documents the President's previous desire to use military force against protesters
Given the House's constitutional oversight role, I urge you to:
1. Use the House Judiciary Committee to hold emergency hearings on limiting the Insurrection Act
2. Introduce legislation requiring congressional approval before Act invocation
3. Exercise the power of the purse to restrict military deployment against civilian protesters
Our literal future depends on your action.
