Opposition to Utah SJR 401 - Amend Utah Constitution - Voter Legislative Power
To: Rep. Defay, Sen. Stevenson
From: A verified voter in Layton, UT
August 22
I am writing to express my deep and unequivocal displeasure regarding your vote in favor of "S.J.R. 401, Proposal to Amend Utah Constitution - Voter Legislative Power." As a concerned citizen and constituent, I find this bill profoundly troubling, and I am disheartened that you would support legislation that seeks to undermine the democratic principles upon which our state and country are built.
This proposal, which effectively weakens the people's power to bring forth and pass legislation through ballot initiatives, represents a blatant disregard for the voice of Utah voters. The right of the people to directly participate in the legislative process is a cornerstone of our democracy, and any attempt to erode that right is a step backward for Utah.
By voting "yea" on S.J.R. 401, you have aligned yourself with those who seek to diminish public influence and concentrate power in the hands of a few. This decision does not serve the interests of your constituents or uphold the principles of transparency, fairness, and accountability that you were elected to protect.
I urge you to reconsider your stance on this matter and work to restore public trust by prioritizing the will of the people over the ambitions of political power brokers. The citizens of Utah deserve better than to have their voices stifled by those who claim to represent them.
Your actions on this issue will not be forgotten. I will be closely watching your future votes and holding you accountable at the ballot box.
