ICE Is Out of Control — Another Death and Armed Confrontations With Police
To: Sen. Kaine, Rep. Beyer, Sen. Warner
From: A constituent in Falls Church, VA
January 25
I am writing to express grave concern over recent actions by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Minnesota, including reports of another person killed during an ICE operation and urgent warnings from local law enforcement that ICE conduct has become dangerous and out of control.
Police chiefs across Minnesota have publicly warned that ICE agents are operating in ways that threaten public safety and undermine trust between law enforcement and the communities they serve. These concerns include reports of ICE agents pulling weapons on off-duty police officers. Brooklyn Park Police Chief Mark Bruley stated plainly: “It has to stop.”
When local police leadership is sounding the alarm about federal agents endangering civilians and fellow officers, Congress has a responsibility to act. Federal law enforcement must be subject to clear oversight, strict accountability, and constitutional limits. No agency should be permitted to operate above the law or beyond effective civilian control.
The reported loss of life connected to ICE operations, combined with aggressive tactics and a lack of transparency, has created fear, confusion, and outrage in Minnesota communities. This is not acceptable in a constitutional democracy.
Congress must immediately conduct oversight of ICE operations in Minnesota, demand transparency and accountability from ICE leadership, suspend enforcement actions that place civilians and law enforcement officers at risk, and reassert its authority to ensure federal agencies respect civil rights and public safety.
ICE exists to enforce immigration law, not to escalate violence, endanger lives, or undermine local law enforcement. The situation in Minnesota demonstrates an urgent need for congressional intervention.
