While I am cautiously optimistic about last night’s wins for the democrats, there are two things that I want from you as your constituent: 1. Call for a cease of the selling of weapons to Israel (and call for the defunding of the iron dome). The U.N. has called what Israel has done (and is still doing) to Gaza, and the Palestinian people as a whole, a genocide. The Democratic Party is supposed to stand up for human rights for everyone, and supporting Israel goes against this very concept because of that country’s treatment of the Palestinian people. The West Bank has also been sealed off and Palestinians are being harassed, injured, displaced, and killed by settlers backed by the IDF. The Democratic party has no place claiming to care about the Palestinian people, peace, human rights and international law and order if they are still supporting apartheid Israel. The blood of thousands of Palestinians is still stained on our hands and you must be one of many people in power to call for an end to this atrocity. 2. Call for new leadership in the House and Senate. Over these past few years, I have lost all faith in Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries’ abilities to lead a party that is meant to care about human rights. From their staunch unconditional support of Israel, to failing to fight back against the Trump administration, these two leaders have shown that they do not represent the majority of their own base. To dampen last night’s historic win with the same old leadership will only cause the American people to flip back to the republicans come next election. It is on you and other senators to call for new, progressive leadership that truly cares about international law and human rights for all.
