I am writing to share concerns about reports of a proposed U.S. financial support package for Argentina. Recent statements from President Trump have directly tied this aid to the outcome of Argentina’s upcoming elections, raising serious questions about the appropriateness of linking American funds to a foreign nation’s political process.
This proposal also comes during an ongoing U.S. government shutdown that has halted key federal services and frozen over $25 billion in state-level funding. At a time when citizens and local governments are facing disruptions, the prospect of committing billions of dollars abroad invites scrutiny regarding fiscal priorities and accountability.
In addition, official notices from the U.S. Office of Government Ethics show Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has not yet completed required divestitures under his ethics agreement. Given this, any involvement of Treasury leadership in negotiating international financial arrangements warrants full transparency to prevent even the appearance of conflict of interest.
Together, these issues underscore the need for congressional review and clear public disclosure before advancing any bailout or financial aid package of this scale. Thank you for considering these concerns and for your continued attention to responsible governance and ethical oversight.
