Demand ICE out of MN
To: Sen. Scott, Sen. Moody, Rep. Luna
From: A constituent in Tarpon Springs, FL
January 24
I am an American deeply disturbed — and enraged — by the recent federal law enforcement actions occurring in Minnesota and what they reveal about the erosion of constitutional protections and democratic norms in our country. Over the past several weeks, federal immigration agents — including officers from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) — have been deployed in Minneapolis and surrounding communities as part of a large immigration enforcement operation. During this period, federal agents have been involved in multiple shootings, including the fatal killing of a 37-year-old Minneapolis resident by an ICE agent, a death that has now officially been ruled a homicide by the Hennepin County Medical Examiner. These fatal encounters, coupled with reports that thousands of federal agents have been stationed in and around Minneapolis, have sparked intense protests, economic walkouts, and widespread civil unrest. Tens of thousands participated in coordinated demonstrations and an economic blackout to demand an end to what many Minnesotans describe as a militarized, chaotic intrusion into their communities. I share the deep concern voiced by civil rights organizations, local officials, and everyday Americans about the unchecked power, use of force, and lack of transparency surrounding these actions. There are serious questions about investigative access and oversight: Minnesota state investigators have reportedly been blocked from accessing key evidence in the federal investigation. These developments raise profound constitutional and ethical concerns: • The use of lethal force by federal agents against residents must be subject to independent, transparent investigation, with accountability where laws and rights have been violated. • Federal enforcement operations carried out without clear legal authority, due process, or respect for civil liberties — and met with lethal outcomes — damage public trust and fuel deep civic distrust. • The appearance of a federal force operating with impunity within a U.S. city should alarm every American committed to the rule of law. Our government’s legitimacy depends on its respect for individual rights, due process, and accountability — not on unchecked power and violence. When federal forces act without clear constraints, and when investigations are controlled exclusively by the agencies involved, the basic principles of justice are threatened. Therefore, I respectfully but urgently call on you, as my elected representative in Congress, to take meaningful action: 1. Demand that the President immediately withdraw ICE and other federal enforcement agents from Minnesota and similar deployments wherever communities are being harmed. 2. Support congressional oversight hearings into the conduct, scope, and legality of these federal operations, especially regarding use of force and civil liberties. 3. Insist on independent, transparent investigations into all shootings involving federal agents, with protections against interference by the agencies under investigation. 4. Champion legislation to rein in federal agencies that engage in operations that threaten constitutional rights, including clear limitations on the use of force and mechanisms for civilian review and accountability. 5. Affirm that no American — citizen or immigrant — should be subjected to violence or intimidation by agents operating without adequate legal oversight. I urge you to put principle before politics. Look to the human cost beneath the rhetoric, and help restore faith in the democratic values this country claims to cherish. Thank you for your immediate attention to this urgent matter.
