Schools should never be hunting grounds for ICE

To: Rep. Lehman, Sen. Holdman, Gov. Braun

From: A constituent in Decatur, IN

February 13

Governor Braun, Sen. Holdman, and Rep. Lehman SB 76 forces schools to partner paramilitary forces. That is not a school's job, not should it ever be. Schools should be focused on educating and preserving the safety of each student. Already, our teachers are under ever increasing strain to take on jobs that are not theirs to shoulder. Our educators deserve our support to do their jobs. Instead this bill requires them, with threats for noncompliance, to fulfill additional duties far outside their scope. It has been proven repeatedly that ICE and DHS agents actively participate in arresting people who they believe appear to be noncitizens. Many times even after the people apprehended have provided passports and other evidence of citizenship they are still trapped in the detention system for months at a time. Is it acceptable to you that American children are thrown into prison and transferred from state to state for weeks at a time? Does it make it acceptable to do so because they have brown or black skin, almond eyes, or unusual last names? It is not acceptable to me. It is not acceptable to me that any children are arrested and thrown into prison as a result of circumstances which they have no control over. It's very simple: keep ICE, Border Patrol, and DHS agents out of our schools.
