Affordable housing

To: Gov. Polis, Rep. Feret, Sen. Daugherty

From: A verified voter in Arvada, CO

April 5

The Colorado Senate has an opportunity to take action to protect renters across our state by banning corporations from using algorithms to determine rent prices and related fees. As your constituent, I urge you to support the prohibition of rental algorithms, a housing solution that ensures stable and predictable rents for residents across our state. I believe that all my neighbors, just like me, need a safe, stable and affordable home where we can raise our families, make connections with our neighbors and get involved in our communities. A stable home is out of reach for people who are driven out of their communities and homes by rising rents. Across the country, landlords are using rent-setting algorithms in order to drive up housing costs and maximize their profits. This practice has played a significant role in large rent increases for hardworking tenants, both in fast-growing areas like Denver and across our state. Corporate landlords are working together to force Coloradans out of their homes and charge extreme rents, all in the name of profit. When we come together across race and place in our state, we can ensure that our families stay housed by stopping landlords from unreasonably inflating rents using algorithms designed for profit instead of for people.
