IRS Data Sharing and Targeting of Immigrants - Unlawful Misuse of Personal Data
To: Sen. Kaine, Sen. Warner, Rep. Kiggans
From: A constituent in Virginia Beach, VA
April 12
I am writing to raise urgent concerns about the apparent weaponization of IRS data and other sensitive government records to target undocumented immigrants—and possibly others—through mass data-sharing agreements. The resignation of Acting IRS Commissioner Melanie Krause and other senior officials over these agreements with the Department of Homeland Security speaks volumes. Until now, the IRS has upheld strict policies to keep taxpayer information confidential, especially from being used in immigration enforcement. This breach of trust undermines not only our tax system but also the promises made to immigrants who contribute billions to our economy while pursuing a path to citizenship.
Reports of mass data-sharing efforts involving Elon Musk’s “Department of Government Efficiency” and private contractors like Palantir raise additional alarms. Minors and U.S. citizens were reportedly swept up in deportation orders based on flawed data, including individuals added to the Social Security Administration’s “death master file” to trigger self-deportation by rendering them financially invisible. This is not only inhumane but potentially unlawful. I respectfully urge you to call for oversight hearings, demand transparency about these data-sharing programs, and pass safeguards to ensure this misuse of personal data never becomes normalized.
