Reject Senate Bill 5798, protect homeowners from excessive taxation.

Washington's hardworking residents and retirees are being unfairly burdened by the proposed increase in property taxes under Senate Bill 5798. As a retiree on a fixed income, these tax hikes would severely strain my already limited financial resources. The 1% limit on property tax increases was put in place by voter-approved Initiative 747 to protect homeowners from excessive taxation. SB 5798 seeks to dismantle this crucial safeguard by replacing it with a formula that could lead to significantly higher yearly increases, putting the dream of homeownership out of reach for many. Instead of asking taxpayers to foot the bill yet again, lawmakers should focus on increasing government efficiency and prioritizing essential services over special interests. The broad definition of "public safety, criminal justice, and community protection services" raises concerns that funds intended for critical areas like police could be diverted to unrelated projects. Taxpayers already contribute substantially to support public services through existing revenue streams. Before imposing further financial burdens, our representatives must explore innovative solutions that do not rely on excessive taxation of struggling homeowners and retirees. I urge you to reject SB 5798 and its harmful impact on those with fixed incomes who have already paid their dues to society. Protect the financial security of your most vulnerable constituents by upholding the tax limitations approved by voters.
