I am writing to you to express my serious concerns regarding the recent U.S. Postal Service (USPS) administrative rule changes concerning mail-in ballot processing. As you may be aware, a coalition of states recently initiated legal challenges against this finalized USPS rule. The state coalition argues that the rule violates state authority under the U.S. Constitution to administer local elections, introduces burdensome administrative tracking and envelope requirements, and threatens to disrupt established vote-by-mail operations shortly before the upcoming midterm elections. Utah has long been a national leader in running secure, highly efficient, and reliable vote-by-mail elections across all 29 counties. Imposing top-down federal restrictions and data portal requirements through the Postal Service undermines Utah's local control over election administration and risks creating confusion for Utah voters. I urge you to support state action, including joining ongoing legal efforts or pursuing independent remedies, to challenge federal mandates that infringe on Utah’s authority over election logistics. Protecting our state's existing, proven election systems is essential for ensuring every eligible voter in Utah can participate securely and seamlessly.
