I am writing to express my deep concern about a recent admission by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent that the so-called “Trump accounts” for newborns tucked into the current MAGA-aligned budget proposal are, in fact a “back door for privatizing Social Security.” This revelation confirms what many have feared: a deliberate, coordinated effort to undermine the Social Security system that millions of Americans rely on. Coupled with the Trump administration’s history of sabotaging the Social Security Administration and Elon Musk’s stated desire to dismantle the program, the trajectory is clear: cut benefits, erode public confidence, and then offer privatization as the only solution. The American people have consistently and overwhelmingly rejected efforts to privatize Social Security. We want to see it strengthened and expanded, not handed over to Wall Street or left vulnerable to market volatility. I urge you to take immediate action to: • Oppose the creation of these so-called “Trump accounts” and remove them from the budget entirely • Investigate the full implications of this policy and the potential harm to Social Security’s long-term solvency • Introduce or support legislation that expands Social Security benefits and ensures its sustainability for future generations. Please do everything in your power to slam shut this back door to privatization. Our country’s most successful anti-poverty program must not be sacrificed for ideological or financial gain.
