Secure press freedoms and whistleblower protections with PRESS Act
To: Sen. Van Hollen, Sen. Cardin
From: A constituent in Silver Spring, MD
December 13
The PRESS Act is crucial legislation that would provide essential protections for journalists and their confidential sources. It would prevent the federal government from compelling journalists to reveal their sources in court, safeguarding the free flow of information to the public. The Act would also prohibit the government from spying on journalists through tactics like surveilling their communications records or online activities. This modern definition of "journalist" aptly covers those in mainstream and independent media alike, upholding press freedoms across the spectrum. With overwhelming bipartisan support having already passed the House unanimously, the PRESS Act is on the precipice of becoming law. However, it is imperative to pass the PRESS Act before Trump takes office, as his administration poses significant threats to press freedom. We urge swift passage of this bill to enshrine robust legal protections for journalists and whistleblowers who play a vital role in facilitating transparency and accountability in our democracy. The public's right to know depends on the ability of the press to safely gather and report information from confidential sources without fear of retaliation or government overreach. Enacting the PRESS Act is an imperative to fortify press freedoms when they are under escalating threats.
