Public land

To: Assembly Member Watts, Sen. Doñate

From: A constituent in Las Vegas, NV

December 3

The way current suburbs are built is irresponsible and inequitable. To open up public land to developers when there are swaths of empty parking lots and empty strip malls and empty lots of land throughout Las Vegas and Henderson is insane. Not to mention the waste of land that is created when we build our streets more wide and dangerously than they need to be- the word stroad comes to mind. When you have more development in the city, travel is more possible for even people without cars. Instead building 5 room houses on the edge of the desert exacerbates our driving culture and is not in line with our vision zero goals to reduce traffic fatalities. People who cannot afford cars cannot afford housing where they need to drive everywhere. You need to visit a city that has done infrastructure right like the Netherlands or Germany. Lastly, sprawl creates water waste. None of these plans make sense except to make you look like you are “progressing” in terms of housing but you are just doing the same thing everyone has been doing all along. We need more inventive solutions.
