Increased VEIP fees

To: Sen. Van Hollen, Sen. Alsobrooks, Rep. McClain Delaney

From: A constituent in Clear Spring, MD

November 7

I’m writing as a frustrated Maryland resident who’s had enough of being nickel-and-dimed by pointless programs. The recent increase in the VEIP emissions testing fee from $14 to $30 is not just unreasonable, it’s insulting. This so-called “environmental protection” program feels like little more than a cash grab dressed up as green policy. Modern vehicles already meet strict emissions standards, and most fail rates are negligible. Forcing residents to take time off work, drive to a testing site, and now pay twice as much for a test that rarely finds any issues is a waste of everyone’s time and money. To make matters worse, registration fees were just raised too. Between that and the inflated VEIP cost, it’s clear Maryland drivers are being squeezed at every turn. If the state needs additional revenue, there are more honest and effective ways to collect it. Don’t pretend this is about clean air when the real result is just another hit to working people’s wallets. I’m asking you to push for the removal of the VEIP program altogether or, at the very least, to repeal this new fee hike. Please start taking the burden off Maryland drivers who already pay some of the highest costs in the region to keep a vehicle on the road. Enough is enough.
