Restore congressional oversight on tariff policy for economic stability.
To: Sen. Tillis, Rep. Rouzer, Sen. Budd
From: A constituent in Wilmington, NC
April 7
The president's aggressive use of tariffs risks damaging both the US and global economy. While tariffs may aim to protect domestic industries, their costs are borne by American consumers and businesses through higher prices and disrupted supply chains. Unchecked, these tariffs could trigger a recession impacting jobs and livelihoods across the country. Congress has a responsibility to serve as a check on executive overreach. The proposed bipartisan legislation would restore congressional oversight on tariff policy, requiring economic justification and allowing Congress to approve or reject new tariffs. This measured approach balances protecting national interests with mitigating harmful economic impacts. Failing to rein in the president's unbounded tariff authority ignores the very system of checks and balances enshrined in the Constitution. Inaction allows one person's protectionist policies to supersede the interests of the nation as a whole. Congress must exercise its authority and pass this legislation to prevent potential economic calamity resulting from an unsupervised trade war.
