Stop workforce cuts undermining Social Security service

To: Sen. Van Hollen, Sen. Alsobrooks, Rep. Mfume

From: A constituent in Baltimore, MD

April 13

The Social Security Administration is facing an unprecedented workforce reduction that will severely undermine its ability to serve the public. Thousands of jobs have already been eliminated, with potentially thousands more layoffs planned in the coming weeks. This drastic downsizing will cripple customer service and lead to soaring wait times for Americans who depend on Social Security's earned benefits. While the Trump administration claims no benefits will be cut, slashing the workforce will undoubtedly delay processing of retirement and disability claims. Experienced field office staff who assist the public are being forced out through buyouts and reassignments, leaving offices understaffed and overwhelmed. Critical support roles like IT are also targeted for major cuts, jeopardizing the agency's ability to function effectively. This relentless attack on the Social Security workforce must stop. Rushing to meet arbitrary staffing quotas will do immense harm to an agency that millions of Americans rely on. Instead of reckless cuts, the administration should fully staff Social Security to ensure prompt and quality service for all those who have paid into the system their entire working lives. Protecting and strengthening this vital program should be the paramount priority.
