I urge you to oppose S.518, the “Defund Government-Sponsored Propaganda Act.” This bill seeks to eliminate federal funding for the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) and National Public Radio (NPR), organizations that provide invaluable educational and informational services to communities nationwide. Public broadcasting serves as a critical resource, especially in rural and underserved areas where commercial media options are limited. Federal funding supports local stations that deliver educational programming, emergency alerts, and unbiased news coverage. Eliminating this support would disproportionately affect these communities, undermining access to essential information. Moreover, public media has consistently been recognized for its trustworthiness and commitment to factual reporting. Defunding PBS and NPR would not only diminish the quality of information available to the public but also erode the democratic values that rely on an informed citizenry. I respectfully request that you stand against S.518 and any similar efforts to defund public broadcasting. Preserving federal support for PBS and NPR is vital to ensuring that all Americans, regardless of location or income, have access to reliable and educational media.
