I am writing to urge you to support the impeachment resolution against Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, introduced by Congressman Thomas Massie and supported by other members.
The charges against Secretary Hegseth are serious and specific. Congressman Massie's resolution lays out eight articles, including waging war against Iran without congressional authorization in violation of the War Powers Resolution, continuing hostilities after Congress directed withdrawal, extrajudicial killings, and suppressing free speech. Representative Yassamin Ansari has filed separate articles citing unauthorized war, violations of the law of armed conflict, and reckless handling of classified information.
Congress has a constitutional duty to hold officials accountable. Speaker Johnson recessed the House early specifically to avoid a vote on this resolution, which is an abdication of that duty. Regardless of party, Congress should not shield a Cabinet secretary from scrutiny when credible allegations of constitutional violations exist.
I ask that you publicly support the Massie resolution, push for a floor vote when the House reconvenes, and use your committee authority to investigate the charges. Curtailing congressional war powers and evading oversight is never acceptable.
