I am writing to demand an immediate investigation into reports of a drugs-for-votes scheme in Puerto Rico’s prison system and the subsequent suppression of federal charges by the Department of Justice. According to recent investigative reporting, the prison gang Los Tiburones distributed narcotics to inmates in exchange for votes for Governor Jenniffer González-Colón. While federal prosecutors reportedly had evidence "locked up" against inmates and complicit prison staff, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Puerto Rico ordered the removal of all election-fraud charges following the 2024 election. Furthermore, lead investigators were directed to halt inquiries into the campaign’s potential involvement. The dismissal of such serious allegations—where drug distribution was leveraged to manipulate election outcomes—suggests interference in the pursuit of justice. If the justice system is being used to protect political allies rather than uphold the law, it constitutes a fundamental threat to our democratic institutions. I urge you to initiate a formal congressional inquiry to determine who authorized the stalling of this case and to ensure all offenders face full legal consequences. Election integrity must be protected from both criminal gangs and political manipulation.
