Opposition to the "Interstate Obscenity Definition Act" (IODA)

To: Rep. Moore, Sen. Curtis, Sen. Lee

From: A verified voter in Layton, UT

May 15

I am writing to express my strong opposition to Senator Mike Lee's proposed "Interstate Obscenity Definition Act" (IODA). I believe this bill represents an overreach of federal power and poses significant threats to individual liberties and internet freedom. My primary concerns are: Vagueness and Overbreadth: The bill's definition of "obscenity" is likely to be overly broad and subjective, potentially leading to the censorship of constitutionally protected speech and artistic expression.   Federal Overreach: This legislation represents an unwarranted intrusion into matters that should be left to state and local jurisdictions, or to individual choice.   Impact on Legitimate Industries: The bill could have unintended consequences for legitimate online industries, including those involving educational materials, artistic content, and medical information. Enforcement Challenges: Enforcing such a law would be incredibly complex and costly, potentially leading to widespread surveillance and privacy violations. First Amendment Concerns: I believe this act would violate the first amendment. I urge you to consider the potential negative consequences of this bill and to oppose its passage. I believe that protecting individual liberties and internet freedom is essential for a healthy and democratic society.
