Oppose Trump’s “big, beautiful” bill: A dangerous betrayal of American values

To: Rep. Wagner

From: A constituent in O Fallon, MO

July 3

I write to you not merely as a concerned citizen, but as an American who is outraged and appalled by the legislation being promoted as former President Trump’s so-called “big beautiful bill.” Let me be clear: this bill is not beautiful. It is a grotesque, self-serving political maneuver soaked in authoritarianism and designed to serve power, not the people. The bill, and the ideology behind it, attacks the core of our republic and undermines the democratic values our country claims to uphold. It is dangerous across nearly every major facet of American life: 1. Rule of Law and Democracy This bill promotes executive lawlessness and immunity from accountability. That is not how democracies function, it’s how they fall. 2. Electoral Integrity It seeks to enshrine baseless election conspiracies under the false flag of “election integrity,” threatening fair access to the ballot and fueling division and distrust. 3. Environmental Rollbacks By dismantling critical environmental protections, it sacrifices clean air, water, and climate security for corporate profit and short-term gain. 4. Economic Inequality This bill prioritizes tax breaks for the wealthy while ignoring working Americans suffering under medical debt, inflation, and stagnant wages. Trickle-down economics has never worked and won’t start now. 5. Healthcare Attacks We cannot call it reform when millions risk losing coverage. Undermining protections for pre-existing conditions and Medicaid expansion is not fiscal responsibility, it’s cruelty. 6. Civil and Human Rights This bill emboldens bigotry, weakens protections for immigrants and LGBTQ+ Americans, and furthers systemic inequality instead of healing it. 7. Anti-Immigrant Extremism A militarized border, mass deportations, and detention camps are not policy solutions. They’re acts of fear, not strength. To quote Emma Lazarus at the Statue of Liberty: “Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free… I lift my lamp beside the golden door.” 8. Authoritarian Overreach Sweeping unrelated provisions into one bill is not leadership—it’s legislative bullying. It silences dissent and undermines checks and balances. 9. Attack on Public Education Suppressing honest education, banning discussions of race and gender, and redirecting funds to private schools dumb down our future in the name of politics. 10. Foreign Policy Regression This bill, aligned with Trump’s praise of autocrats, damages our global reputation, destabilizes diplomacy, and weakens democratic alliances. 11. Divisive, Performative Rhetoric The bill is as toxic in tone as it is in content—designed to provoke, not unify. The American people are tired of cruelty masquerading as governance. This bill is not about America’s future. It is the last gasp of a political movement willing to burn the country down to stay in power. I strongly urge you to reject it. In this moment, we don’t need partisanship—we need courage.
