Reject Discriminatory Birth Certificate Restrictions for Transgender Arizonans

To: Rep. Gutierrez, Rep. Mathis, Sen. Sundareshan

HB2438: Problematic Birth Certificate Requirements This bill HB2438 imposes unreasonable restrictions on transgender individuals seeking to update the gender marker on their birth certificates. Requiring surgery and a court order creates significant financial, logistical, and emotional barriers. Many transgender people are unable or choose not to undergo surgery for a variety of valid reasons. A simple self-attestation process would respect their gender identity without imposing unnecessary burdens. Furthermore, inaccurate identity documents expose transgender people to potential discrimination and safety risks. I urge you to oppose this discriminatory legislation and instead enact policies that affirm the dignity and human rights of all Arizonans, regardless of gender identity or expression.
