Support Resolution to Block Military Action Against Greenland

To: Rep. Maloy, Sen. Lee, Sen. Curtis

From: A constituent in Salt Lake City, UT

January 7

I am writing to urge you to support Senator Ruben Gallego's resolution blocking the use of military force against Greenland. The recent statements by President Trump about needing Greenland for national security, combined with the weekend military operation that captured Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro, have created a dangerous precedent that threatens our alliances and international standing. Trump stated in an interview with The Atlantic that "We do need Greenland, absolutely. We need it for defense" and suggested Denmark cannot adequately protect it. When asked if the Venezuela operation had implications for Greenland, he left others to determine the connection. On Monday, Senator Gallego introduced an amendment to the Senate Defense Appropriations bill to prohibit funding for military force against Greenland. Any military action against Greenland would be an attack on a NATO ally. As Senator Chris Murphy noted, Article 5 of the NATO treaty would require member countries to defend Greenland against the United States. This would destroy the alliance that has been the cornerstone of Western security for over 75 years. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen emphasized that Greenland is already covered by NATO's security guarantee and that the United States has wide access to Greenland through an existing defense agreement. The governments of Denmark and Greenland requested a meeting with Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Tuesday through Foreign Minister Vivian Motzfeldt, noting they have been requesting ministerial-level meetings throughout 2025 without success. Our closest allies deserve better than threats and ignored diplomatic requests. If we want to increase our presence in Greenland to counter Russian and Chinese Arctic influence, as Senator Lindsey Graham suggested, we can achieve this through diplomacy and our existing defense agreements. Military aggression against a democratic ally is not the answer. I urge you to cosponsor Senator Gallego's resolution and vote to block any military action against Greenland.
