The continued expansion of fossil fuel production is fundamentally incompatible with addressing the climate crisis. Scientific analysis shows that a significant portion of existing fossil fuel reserves must remain unextracted if we are to limit global temperature rise and avoid catastrophic climate impacts. The Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty presents a coordinated international framework to manage a just transition away from fossil fuels by phasing out new coal, oil, and gas projects. This is a crucial step to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in line with the Paris Agreement goals. Our state should endorse this treaty as part of a comprehensive plan to transition to clean energy sources while supporting impacted communities and workers. Formal endorsement would demonstrate climate leadership and commitment to protecting our citizens and future generations from the existential threat of unchecked climate change.
