As your constituent, I urge you to launch a congressional investigation into the Trump administration's Venezuelan gold operations. This matter involves rule of law, accountability, and America's standing in the Western Hemisphere. The Trump administration has fast-tracked Venezuelan gold exports through arrangements that, despite public assurances of reform, facilitate organized crime and corruption. A New York Times investigation reveals that the administration accepted gold directly from criminal networks while claiming to legitimize Venezuela's mining industry. Within weeks of the military intervention that removed President Nicolás Maduro, the White House approved a deal with the trading company Trafigura to export Venezuelan gold. Officials celebrated the first shipment with photographs and fanfare, yet hundreds of millions of dollars in gold now sits untouched in American warehouses because refiners refuse to certify its legal origin. The arrangement is deeply compromised. Trafigura and its Venezuelan partner, Minerven, promised to source gold only from secure, military-guarded mines to avoid criminal involvement. Yet the gold flowing into America is linked to miners who pay protection money to Tren de Guayana, a criminal gang. Brigade leaders confirmed that twenty percent of their monthly gold production goes directly to organized crime. This gold is then melted down and sold to Trafigura, meaning the United States is knowingly importing proceeds from extortion and criminal enterprise. The administration granted permits and praised the venture while ignoring warnings from its own consultants that exploitation is deeply entrenched in the Venezuelan gold ecosystem. Furthermore, Interior Secretary Doug Burgum and White House officials prioritized speed over due diligence. Trafigura exported millions of dollars in gold before independent auditors even visited the mines. Other private equity firms, following this example, now pursue even riskier open-pit mining operations tied to organized crime. The Trump administration promised to end Venezuela's corrupt gold industry. Instead, it has legitimized criminal networks by directing American investment toward them. Congress must investigate how officials approved these deals despite known criminal connections, whether administration figures profited from the arrangement, and how the administration plans to resolve the crisis of uncertifiable gold sitting in American warehouses. This is not about partisan politics. It is about whether the United States government will knowingly participate in organized crime for commercial gain. I ask you to demand full transparency from the State Department, Interior, and Treasury regarding all Venezuelan gold agreements, require independent audits of the gold's origins, and hold administration officials accountable for facilitating criminal enterprise. Doug Burgum should be impeached.
