No ICE detention center at camp Atterbury

To: Gov. Braun, Rep. Summers, Sen. Taylor

From: A verified voter in Indianapolis, IN

July 19

I write today as a concerned Hoosier regarding the proposed plan to convert Camp Atterbury–Muscatatuck into a large-scale ICE detention and processing center. Indiana’s tradition of hospitality, compassion, and support for neighbors would be overshadowed by turning a critical National Guard training facility into a holding site for detained immigrants. This is not the Indiana we know or want. Key Objections: 1. Contradicts Hoosier Values. We pride ourselves on kindness and neighborliness. Housing large numbers of detainees at Camp Atterbury sends the opposite message—cold, institutional, and unwelcoming. 2. Threatens Military Readiness. This base is crucial for National Guard training and rapid military mobilization. Diverting space and resources to civil detention undermines those missions . 3. Economic & Cultural Damage. This move risks damaging our reputation. Sporting events, conferences, tournaments, and businesses may avoid Indiana, fearing association with detention operations—not to mention national and international backlash. 4. Human Rights & Civil Liberties. Reports caution that conditions in similar ICE facilities—tent camps and “soft-sided” structures—often fall short on accountability, due process, and basic humanity . 5. Local Impact & No Consent. Communities near Edinburgh and Johnson County were never asked whether they supported becoming a detention site. Such a decision requires open public input, not surprise declarations. ⸻ Conclusion & Request: Camp Atterbury should remain what it is: a symbol of Hoosier readiness and service, not a political centerpiece. I urge you to: 1. Oppose any legislation or funding enabling this conversion. 2. Demand transparency from federal authorities regarding timing, oversight, capacity, and human conditions. 3. Protect military readiness and preserve base operations for National Guard training. 4. Respect community voices by involving local elected officials, law enforcement, and residents in any proposals. This facility threatens our values, our economy, and our global reputation. Let us stand together to ensure Indiana remains a beacon of compassion, opportunity, and service—for all. Thank you for your attention and service to our community. I look forward to your support and leadership on this critical issue. Sincerely,
