Hello. I am writing to urge you to co-sponsor LRB-0750.
Boycotts are protected political speech under the First Amendment. They are a long-standing, nonviolent tool citizens use to express conscience and influence public policy. Regardless of one’s views on Israel, compelling contractors to certify that they will not engage in a lawful boycott as a condition of doing business with the state raises serious constitutional concerns.
LRB-0750 is not about foreign policy. It is about whether Wisconsin should condition public contracts on a pledge limiting protected political expression. Our Right to Boycott Law is straightforward and pro-democracy: the government should not force individuals or businesses to relinquish constitutional rights in order to compete for state work.
If a contractor’s performance meets state standards, why should their private political views determine eligibility? The current statute places the state in the position of policing political expression. That weakens trust in government and invites legal challenges.
Supporting LRB-0750 affirms Wisconsin’s commitment to free speech, viewpoint neutrality, and limited government. I respectfully ask you to add your name as a co-sponsor and help ensure our laws align with constitutional principles.
Thank you for your consideration. I would appreciate knowing your position on this issue.
