Congratulations on your re-election yesterday!
I am happy about your re-election and your caucus' ascendance for many reasons, and perhaps the most important to me is your potential to lead democratic reforms. In this era of repudiation of and recovery from Trumpism, Congress has a responsibility and opportunity to create and re-energize the Ulysses Pacts that our government uses to prevent those entrusted with power from using their office to subvert democracy and retain their power.
To that end, I would urge you to drive and support legislation that is designed clearly to bolster democracy without partisan bias, including clean bills to:
- Prohibit partisan gerrymandering
- Prohibit mid-decade redistricting
- Prohibit stock-trading and facilitation of insider trading by members of Congress and the leaders of both of the other two branches.
You know better than I do what particular reforms are needed, and the legislative form those reforms need to take. But the overall theme must be, to my mind, the protection of our system of government from corruption. If this is done correctly, it will likely cause inconvenience to members of both major parties. I hope so, because that will be a sign that our government is returning to acting for the benefit of the country.
