Boren oversees the Forest Service — the very agency responsible for fighting wildfires — while his family's ranch operation triggered the 2024 Rosie Fire, a 5,600-acre blaze that cost taxpayers at least $950,000 to contain. His brother Steve Boren set at least 20 unpermitted ignitions on state land during a burn hold, lied to fire dispatchers about it, and then told investigators the suppression effort was "a waste of taxpayer money" while refusing to cooperate with government agents. Michael Boren holds an ownership stake in Josephine Creek Ranch, Inc., confirmed in his own financial disclosure. This isn't a distant family matter — it's a direct conflict of interest at the heart of federal wildfire policy. Three senators have already demanded an investigation into Boren's separate misuse of federal firefighting aircraft near another personal ranch. That investigation needs to expand to cover the Rosie Fire. Rollins has a responsibility to act. The fact that neither Boren nor his brother faces any known consequences is exactly the kind of institutional failure that erodes public trust in government. Push for their removal now.
