I implore you to intervene on behalf of Mahmoud Khalil, the Columbia University student who was detained by ICE because of his activism on campus. While I may not agree with Mr. Khalil's political stance, I do agree with the long-honored quote (often attributed wrongly to Voltaire) by Evelyn Beatrice Hall which reads: "I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it." The First Amendment is one of the hallmarks of the United States and used to stand as a beacon for freedom around the world. Now, freedom of speech is being quashed left and right. Please use your elected position, having taken the oath to uphold the Constitution, to bring back the protections of the First Amendment. Please work to free Mr. Khalil. Also, please work to prevent continued silencing of those who disagree with the current administration through threats and intimidation.
