I am writing to urge you to publicly demand that the Trump administration immediately cease its investigation into Representative Ilhan Omar's citizenship. This investigation represents a dangerous departure from constitutional governance and must not proceed. The facts are deeply troubling. Federal agents searched Representative Omar's home and seized her personal belongings during the final weeks of her re-election campaign, violating longstanding Justice Department protocol against taking public investigative action against candidates within 60 days of an election. This timing is not coincidental. President Trump has spent years publicly attacking Representative Omar in inflammatory and often racist language, calling her "garbage" and "scum," and in January explicitly stated she should be "thrown out" and stripped of citizenship. Months later, the investigation began. The alleged basis for this investigation—that her father misrepresented her age by one year during her naturalization process 26 years ago—pales in comparison to the chilling precedent it establishes. If the government can resurrect decades-old technicalities to strip citizenship from a prominent political critic, no naturalized American is safe from weaponized prosecution. History shows us where this leads. The Soviet Union, Nazi Germany, Pinochet's Chile, and communist Eastern Europe all used citizenship revocation against political opponents. The Red Scares of twentieth-century America saw similar tactics employed against labor leaders and immigrants. These are the hallmarks of authoritarian regimes, not democracies. What makes this moment critical is the pattern. The Trump administration has selectively prosecuted or investigated numerous critics while pardoning allies guilty of far more serious crimes. This selective application of law enforcement power is incompatible with the rule of law. Representative Omar is a sitting member of Congress, an American citizen, and a fierce defender of her constituents. She deserves the same protections afforded all citizens under our Constitution. I urge you to speak out against this investigation and demand its immediate termination. Our democracy depends on it.
