The vote to end the shutdown will cause more harm than good
To: Sen. Rosen, Sen. Cortez Masto
From: A constituent in Las Vegas, NV
November 10
I voted blue across the board this past election period and I am regretting that decision today. The republican senators have given you exactly zero reason to believe that they have any interest in a bipartisan solution for the budget.
Sen Cortez Masto, you said “We also have an opportunity now to put Republicans on the record on the ACA… And if they do not come to the table, they will own the premium increases they cause.” Senator, republicans are already on the record on the ACA. They have campaigned on the idea of limiting the ACA. Your vote to side with Republicans will be just that, a vote for the republicans. They happily own the increases already. You will prove nothing.
Sen. Rosen, you said yourself that “Trump and his Republican cronies on Capitol Hill do not give a damn about hurting working people” and in the same breath you said “Nevadans and all Americans deserve access to affordable health care, and Senate Republicans need to work with us in a bipartisan way before the next deadline.” As you stated, they do not give a damn about hurting working people. That will still be true for the next deadline.
Neither of you voted to fix anything, you’ve only kicked the problem down the line. You’ve panicked and played yourselves at the cost of your constituents. You both have granted access to alleviate short term issues with a cheap bandaid. You allow long term issues like affordable healthcare get worse by showing you are ready to bend. They are holding the government hostage and you did exactly what they were hoping you and other democrats would do. I’m a woman and a millennial voter. I am exhausted by democrats who continuously vote with the hope that republicans will play fairly. They won’t. We are far beyond reasonable governance or status quo. That has been proven again and again. We are facing fascism and the dismantling of our democracy and you both are out here trying to compromise with authoritarians and dictators. If you think this vote shows any kind of strength, leadership or bipartisan integrity on your part, you are sadly mistaken.
