Urgent Request for Civilian Safety Planning in High-Risk Areas of New Jersey
To: Gov. Sherrill
From: A verified voter in Budd Lake, NJ
March 9
As tensions escalate between the United States and Iran and explicit threats of retaliation continue to be issued against American targets, residents of New Jersey deserve immediate clarity regarding their safety.
Our state sits within the radius of multiple potential strategic targets: military facilities, federal infrastructure, transportation hubs, and the densely populated corridor linking New Jersey to New York City. Communities across northern and central New Jersey live in close proximity to installations and logistical infrastructure that would be considered high-value targets in any retaliatory strike scenario.
Yet there has been no visible statewide guidance addressing civilian preparedness should international conflict expand to include attacks on U.S. soil.
New Jersey residents deserve to know:
• What contingency plans exist for communities located near military bases, arsenals, and critical infrastructure.
• Whether evacuation routes, public alert systems, and sheltering protocols have been updated for modern missile, drone, or cyber-infrastructure threats.
• How the state will coordinate with federal agencies and neighboring states to protect the millions of civilians living within the New York metropolitan corridor.
Preparedness is not alarmism. It is responsible governance.
New Jersey has long been one of the most densely populated states in the nation, with millions of families living within commuting distance of strategic infrastructure. Leaving these residents without a clear safety framework during a period of escalating international threats is unacceptable.
I urge your administration to immediately develop and publicly release a comprehensive civilian safety plan for residents living near military installations, critical infrastructure, and major metropolitan targets. Transparent communication, emergency guidance, and coordination with municipalities must happen now—before a crisis forces our hand.
The people of New Jersey deserve proactive leadership and a clear plan for their safety.
