Environmental advocates were up in arms when Gov. Kathy Hochul revived the Northeast Supply Enhancement pipeline. Now, advocates in New Jersey are hoping that Gov. Mikie Sherrill will put a stop to it. NESE looked all but dead after New York and New Jersey repeatedly rejected water quality permits for the project from 2018 to 2020. Amid pressure from President Donald Trump, environmental agencies under Hochul and former New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy issued water quality permits last November. On Wednesday, the Tidelands Resource Council, under New Jersey’s Department of Environmental Protection, abruptly canceled a meeting during which it was slated to consider issuing a license that would enable the project to move forward with construction. “This project has zero benefit to New Jersey, and New Jerseyans take all of the risk,” said Allison McLeod, executive director of the New Jersey League of Conservation Voters.
