An Open Letter
To: Sen. Shaheen
From: A constituent in Fremont, NH
March 15
I appreciate hearing back from your office, especially as the President's rhetoric continues to target his political opponents and his outrageous executive orders test our institutional rigor.
When I became an American citizen on July 4th 2022, you gave an inspirational, improvised address alongside congressman Chris Pappas that made me feel proud of the country that has been my home for my entire adult life. We are a nation of immigrants, the center of global innovation, and the shining example of democracy and freedom to the world. Each and every pillar of that foundation is under threat from this administration, and after Friday's controversial CR vote, I'm losing my confidence that these principles will survive. It was exactly the lack of resistance my prior letter addressed, and I was shocked to see both NH senators had voted yes, perhaps because it was perceived you'd get the least pushback from constituents.
This fight matters, and has real, immediate consequences for me and my fellow Americans. I have family in Canada. We all rely on federal governance and programs like medicare and social security. We all have family members and friends who are being vilified and attacked by this administration for no justifiable reason (being a woman, a person of color, a transgender individual etc).
We are counting on you. This is not a normal political environment, where reaching across the aisle will accomplish what's necessary.
Thank you for hearing me out.
