As a constituent of yours, I am writing to demand your immediate resignation from the United States Senate. Your recent admission that “Congress can’t do anything except complain” in response to Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency dismantling the federal government is an unacceptable abdication of your constitutional duty.
The Constitution does not exist to enable a president—or his unelected billionaire allies—to gut federal agencies, purge employees, or seize taxpayer data unchecked. It is the responsibility of Congress, particularly the Senate Judiciary Committee which you chair, to serve as a check on executive overreach, not a bystander to it. Your statement amounts to an admission that you are either unwilling or incapable of upholding that duty.
If you believe Congress is powerless, then you have no business remaining in Congress. If you are unwilling to fight for the preservation of our democratic institutions, then you must step aside for someone who will.
Your personal anecdotes about job loss do not change the reality that thousands of public servants are being removed for political and ideological reasons, with severe consequences for governance, national security, and the American people. Instead of offering nostalgia and resignation, you should be leading the charge to stop this authoritarian power grab.
For decades, Iowans have entrusted you with the responsibility of representing them in the Senate. If you no longer believe in the ability—or the duty—of Congress to act in defense of democracy, then it is time for you to resign.
