One Big Beautiful Bill reflections
To: Sen. Scott, Sen. Moody
From: A constituent in Deland, FL
June 5
It's time we discuss the One Big Beautiful Bill (OBBB). I always try to bring you topics where I think we can find consensus, as I recognize our differences in political viewpoints. This bill is where I think we can find some agreements. 1) Nationa debt - $2.4 trillion dollars to the debt over the next 10 years, according to the non-partisan CBO. I know there's some discussion around the economic growth cutting into this number, but let's be honest, with the unemployment numbers growing (https://apnews.com/article/unemployment-benefits-jobless-claims-layoffs-labor-795ec07804ed3f35eb702af27c4983d0) and the tariffs causing havoc on the price of goods (https://budgetlab.yale.edu/research/where-we-stand-fiscal-economic-and-distributional-effects-all-us-tariffs-enacted-2025-through-april), that conversation is a non-starter. 2) Millions losing health care coverage - Roughly 15 million by CBO counts as well as a minimum of 9.7 million losing Medicaid coverage (https://www.cbpp.org/research/health/by-the-numbers-house-bill-takes-health-coverage-away-from-millions-of-people-and). The state of Florida cannot risk a loss like this. As of 2024, FL had 2 million uninsured residents and 25% of residents were receiving Medicare or Medicaid assistance (https://www.kff.org/statedata/election-state-fact-sheets/florida/). Losing Medicare and Medicaid will take benefits away from over 6 million people. 3) Artifical Intelligence - States will not have the ability to regulate AI, nor will any government oversight be regulated (https://builtin.com/articles/big-beautiful-bill-ai-policy-analysis). With the used of AI now, it is dangerous for platforms to continue to progress the technology without oversight. These three issues alone should be enough to give pause to the blind passage of the bill. Not to mention the steep cuts to other programs and services we all need to survive. Please take a moment and consider what direct impact this bill will have on the citizens of Florida. While I know political expediency is tough right now, it is still a necessity to consider all the voters, not just the ones that agree with particular ideology.
