The Dangers of the "GUARD Act" (S.B. 2394) for Transgender Youth This proposed legislation, the "GUARD Act" (S.B. 2394), seeks to impose a federal mandate on states by withholding crucial child welfare funding if they do not restrict access to gender-affirming care for transgender minors. Such care is deeply personal and should be guided by medical professionals, families, and the best interests of the child - not blanket government prohibitions. Denying evidence-based medical treatment endorsed by major health organizations puts vulnerable transgender youth at increased risk of depression, anxiety, and suicide. It undermines family autonomy and disregards the standards of care developed by medical experts. Rather than discriminating against families and overriding the rights of parents to make informed choices about their children's wellbeing, Congress should focus on expanding access to comprehensive youth mental health services. All young people, regardless of gender identity, deserve support and affirmation during their critical developmental years. I urge you to protect the health and rights of transgender youth by opposing this punitive legislation that threatens to cause real harm to an already marginalized group of children. A compassionate, evidence-based approach is needed to safeguard the welfare of all kids and families.
