An Open Letter

To: Rep. Beatty

From: A constituent in Columbus, OH

June 30

The proposed budget and tax legislation being considered in the Senate poses grave risks to essential programs that protect the wellbeing of millions of Americans. The draconian cuts to Medicaid, including work requirements and reduced federal funding, jeopardize healthcare access for low-income families, children, the elderly, and disabled individuals. Similarly, shifting costs of vital nutrition assistance programs like SNAP to cash-strapped states will only deepen food insecurity across the nation. Furthermore, the bill's provisions undermining asylum protections and increasing fees run counter to American values of compassion and human rights. Rather than erecting barriers, a just immigration system should create legal pathways while upholding due process. This regressive legislation also fails to address the existential threat of climate change, doubling down on unsustainable energy policies that imperil our planet's future. Prioritizing corporate interests over the public good, it entrenches an exploitative economic model that widens inequality. Instead of dismantling the social safety net, lawmakers should strengthen programs that promote opportunity, dignity and security for all. Policies should be grounded in facts, reason and a commitment to serving the greater good, not partisan interests. I urge you to vote against this destructive legislation and work towards an agenda that unites rather than divides the nation.
