An Open Letter

To: Sen. Crapo, Sen. Risch, Rep. Simpson

From: A constituent in Boise, ID

June 21, 2025

I am writing to you as a deeply concerned constituent and proud resident of Idaho, regarding the recent news that public lands along the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) may be eligible for sale. This is not only unimaginable—it is unacceptable. These lands belong to the American people and should not be treated as real estate inventory for private gain. The Pacific Crest Trail is a sanctuary—not just for wildlife, but for people seeking solace, challenge, and connection to the land. Thousands of hikers, families, students, veterans, and nature lovers rely on this trail for physical and mental well-being. Opening the door to the sale and fragmentation of these public lands undermines decades of bipartisan conservation efforts and sacrifices our natural heritage for short-term gain. Please, I urge you to take immediate and unequivocal action: • Oppose any legislation or budgetary measures that would allow for the sale of public lands along or near the Pacific Crest Trail. • Support permanent protections for the lands surrounding the PCT, including those managed by the BLM and USFS. • Work with your colleagues to pass legislation that reinforces our national commitment to public land stewardship and outdoor access for all Americans. Thank you for your time, your service, and your attention to this urgent matter.
