Urgently Oppose Cuts to SNAP and Medicaid—You can't collect taxes from the dead!

To: Rep. Tiffany

From: A constituent in Deerbrook, WI

February 27

I am writing to express my deep concern and outright opposition to the proposed plan by President Trump to cut SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) and Medicaid benefits. This plan represents not only an assault on the very fabric of our nation’s commitment to care for its most vulnerable citizens but also a profound moral failing that undermines the trust placed in our government. It is projected that millions of Americans—estimates suggest over 30 million individuals—would experience severe hardships as a direct result of these cuts. These programs, which millions depend on for basic healthcare and nutritional needs, represent lifelines that keep families from descending into abject poverty. To cut them would be to intentionally inflict suffering on people who are already struggling to survive in an increasingly harsh economic climate. We cannot ignore that these cuts will have lethal consequences. Children will be at risk of starvation without the nutritional support provided by SNAP, and elderly people will suffer from the inability to obtain necessary medications and medical care through Medicaid. The very real outcome is a preventable loss of life—a result that is entirely unacceptable when our nation has the means to support these most vulnerable populations. It is especially galling considering that America is the wealthiest country on the planet, endowed with unparalleled resources yet choosing to jeopardize the lives of its citizens. Furthermore, while it may be argued that the government needs to trim expenditures, we must remind policymakers of the fundamental truth that “we can’t collect taxes from the DEAD.” This statement underscores the inherent absurdity of policies that appear designed to reduce the number of beneficiaries in order to balance budgets, rather than address the systemic issues that lead to reliance on public assistance. Such measures threaten to leave our seniors, children, and low-income families without essential support at a time when they most need it. I urge you, as my elected representative, to stand up for the rights and dignity of all constituents by vehemently opposing this proposal. Instead of pursuing policies that cut essential services for those who need them most, I implore you to work on sustainable, compassionate reforms that strengthen these critical safety-net programs while addressing the fiscal challenges our nation faces. Our country’s strength is measured not only by its economic might but by its capacity for compassion.
