Oppose the Sunshine Protection Act — Keep Standard Time
To: Sen. Cassidy, Sen. Kennedy
From: A verified voter in Shreveport, LA
July 16
Vote against the Sunshine Protection Act. Making daylight saving time permanent sounds appealing, but the science is clear: permanent standard time is what aligns with our natural circadian rhythms, and locking in daylight saving time would leave millions of Americans waking up in darkness for months on end, with real consequences for health, safety, and productivity.
The American Academy of Sleep Medicine, along with a broad coalition of medical experts, supports permanent standard time — not permanent daylight saving time. Permanent DST means darker winter mornings, which research links to increased cardiovascular risk, higher rates of depression, and more traffic fatalities. This bill gets the policy backwards. If Congress wants to end the twice-yearly clock change, the answer is standard time, not doubling down on a system that disrupts our health every single day.
