I am writing today about the For Our Freedom Act proposed by American Promise. This act would support states and Congress to tackle the out of control money in our campaigns and elections. The overwhelming majority of people in the US supported such measures when polled. This majority includes Republicans, Democrats, Independents, and people who identify as other. 23 states have already signed onto this campaign. These are both Red and Blue states. The wording of the propose amendment is as followes. Section 1. We the People have compelling sovereign interests in the freedom of speech, representative self-government, federalism, the integrity of the electoral process, and the political equality of natural persons. Section 2. Nothing in this Constitution shall be construed to forbid Congress or the States, within their respective jurisdictions, from reasonably regulating and limiting contributions and spending in campaigns, elections, or ballot measures. Section 3. Congress and the States shall have the power to implement and enforce this article by appropriate legislation and may distinguish between natural persons and artificial entities, including by prohibiting artificial entities from raising and spending money in campaigns, elections, or ballot measures. I would suggest that people can not expect equal representation under the law when elections can be swung with massive amounts of cash from billionaire donors like Elon Musk or Michael Bloomberg. It is undermining the very fabric of our democracy. We must get big money and dark money out of politics once and for all. Elected officials should be beholden to the best interest of the people in their states. They should not be beholden to super pacs and lobbyests. They should not spend so many of their working hours trying to get money for their next campaign. Please push for this amendment to be brought forth for consideration.
