I've just read the Trump administration is developing a plan to withhold federal funding and otherwise bypass state laws regulating AI, whether through Executive Order or otherwise. The fact that America has no federal regulation around AI is alarming in and of itself. Not just because of the impact on Americans' already fragile mental health, dumpster-fire political atmosphere, or general mis- and disinformation issues. But also the drastic and well-documented environmental impact of the massive data centers they require and the havoc they wreak on the health of nearby citizens. This is deeply concerning. I don't want my utility prices soaring unchecked because a data center moves in down the street. I don't want to worry about whether my neighborhood has clean water because the data centers use all the water and contaminate the air. We cannot let the Trump administration control the future of AI in America. They cannot be trusted to put the good of the country and it's citizens above the potential money to be made from the technology. Many experts believe it may be too late to reign in AI. To prevent the atrocities that are likely coming. But if we act now, collectively, we might be able to curtail it. Our window is small, and we must be decisive. Do whatever you can to prevent the Trump administration from using its unchecked authoritarian tendencies to destroy our window to regulate AI. Before it causes untold damage. Before this administration does more to irreparably harm this country. Do not let Trump use Executive Orders, withholding of funds, or other tactics to bypass state laws regulating AI. And please work to codify laws that will keep the industry in check and prevent it from harming Americans now.
